Unfinished Poem to Thailand

Something I've been working on today. If you guys have any feedback, suggestions, please comment. Is anything here that sounds a bit over the top or like it's not honest or it's too vague or too simple? Any comments? Feel free to write me here. I'd appreciate it! Thanks. Ani.

Unfinished Poem to Thailand

Once, a tree stood out against the blue, leafless and full of white birds.

At the highest point of the monastery, someone has placed white plumerias and purple bougainvilleas over symmetrically arranged bamboo sticks inside a blue plate filled with water: a way to greet the morning, a way to give thanks, a way that I understand, being far from home.

I crouch inside the roots of a tree to have my picture taken, not knowing the jasmine and marigolds dangling above my head mean a spirit is worshiped here.

I have made friends that I’ve lost in the making. I have made friends that I’ll keep even as I forget them.

Near River Kwai, I have climbed down stairs to see how we torture our own and I’ve climbed up the same stairs to find how we worship stone.

Elephants grabbed bananas out of my hands. I’ve sat with two tigers; it was like standing on a cliff readying to jump off. A monkey sat on a tree stump, holding his neck, as if to say he’d hang himself if I left.

The sun passed me many times and when it sat one evening, its reflection on the lake was a monk, waving a hand.

A long boat sliced through water. The water stitched itself right back.

The King and Queen smile, framed behind glass. They were my age once.

Golden temples stand ceremonious, and here, foreigners hold each other, smiling, in photos they will send home, in photos they’ll forget soon.

Nothing hits home like the lime green of a rice field. The field workers know it. The King knows it. The rats do too.

At the river market, the fisherman sells crabs and shrimp with haste. His boat sways at the dock, his boat longs to be anchored there a long time.

The grasses on the side of the road, leaning in the wind, their heads white in the sun, like my father, leaning and white.

Huts on the green river, holding each other. The people inside holding away from me.

The rain in the monsoon season, punctual every afternoon, like father coming home from work.

I have met happy people. I will never meet them again.

The sunlight behind white bouganvillea petals, cold and rich like sealed letters, mailed off to someone I wait for.

I lit a candle on a krathong, placed it on the pond water and pushed it gently out, watched it yield to the other krathongs then burn itself up. I tried not to be Thai about the flame though I still think about it at times.

Already a year after I’ve been married, my students see me in the hall and still say, “Hi, Miss Ani. Woops, I meant Mrs. Ani.”

A python lay like a wet sweater at the bottom of our garbage can.

There was a pot on a river, near dusk, tilted, about to pour, though nothing poured out, except the evening, filled with my longing.

I ran home in the rain. Found a feather stuck to my toe. Blessed the bird I never saw.

Once, the moon was a lantern in someone’s yard. In that yard, I sat across the moon, my silhouette on fire, wishing he could see me now.

In the woods, the light keeps running. For once, I keep up.

Thailand, where I want to say, the open mouths of orchids speak in my mother’s voice. In truth, it is only the dogs that speak my mother’s tongue. Dogs always wandering Thailand the way my mother has wandered, and her mother before her, and I afterwards. Thailand, where trees knot roots with each other, where they tell me to wait, where they say my own haven’t grown yet, so girl, stop searching.

A Reply

In reply to Mrs. Ani's recent entry, I'd say that having this blog for this class helps a lot in our communication with one another. Most of the things mentioned here, I believe, would have never come out in class. Think of it this way...we're able to express ourselves here as much as we like without being bothered by the thought that others apart from this class will read the entries we've made. It's like a little 'sanctuary' because everything that is typed in here is/was built on a circle of trust. If I didn't explain myself quite clearly there, or if something I typed is a little bit off, anyone of you are welcome to correct me.

I do agree though that having a blog wouldn't be appropriate for every class or course. I can't imagine having a blog, let's say, for a Statistics class. I'm actually smiling at the thought of ramblings in numbers...haha! I wonder what meaning could a reader come up with it. Let's just hand it to the Math majors or any of that sort.

So what I'm simply trying to say here is that I think having this blog is great. Do wish that there were more diligent entries made here though. Reminds me, that's something I have to work on myself. Haha! My confession of the week.

It's the end of the week. What a relief! I survived just yet another week. Hope to see more of the others here ;)

-Lorena-

Dear Omniscribblers

Well, it's not even been a whole week, and a few of you have not had the chance to post all that regularly yet, and I don't know about you all, but is it just me who's really impressed with our Circle of Trust? I think the blog world is amazing and if my teachers had made use of a blog for each class I took, I think it would have been so much more interesting and made me feel more comfortable in their classes. I think it would have helped me get more talkative in class *hint, hint* *wink, wink*. Seriously though, I mean, it's not even been a week and yet I've already had so many chances to communicate with you guys in a way that I cannot do through journals, or in the class, or outside of it, because it takes time to collect and return journals, and because I'm either running to the next class, or you are, or some other reason. So, so far, this is turning to be beneficial to me as a teacher. Do you feel the same or is it to soon to say? Do you predict any disadvantages of having a blog along with a class? Besides the obvious time it asks of you. I guess maybe a blog may not be appropriate for certain classes, maybe more appropriate for practical ones like this and say Speech class etc. I'd like to hear from you when you get a chance.

Well, it's a gorgeous lunch hour and I hope it stays dry all day so I can go riding with my husband. You all have a beautiful, relaxing, blessed weekend. Daron, hope you're feeling better already.

Childhood!!

I have always wanted to write something on our "circle of trust". But i always have no inspiration to write. Until today i saw some photos of my friend's baby. She is so cute and make me think of my own childhood.

All my memories of my childhood was from my parents. I skin was very dark when I was little, about 8 months old. At that time, we had only one room for the whole family. My mother, my father, and me, three of us slept on one bed. Our bed was just enough for two people and a baby. My parents afraid i will fall down from our bed so they put me beside the wall. The weather in China is quite cold, so we have central warming system in every family. It was a small thing made by metal inside the wall, and there were hot water inside in orde to keep warm. Becase of this thing, so there was a litter space beside me. But it was impossible for me to fall down.

One morning when my parents woke up, they couldn't find in on the bed and anywhere else. They were so anxious. They have searched all the place in our house, including the space under bed. However they still could find me. About half an hour later, just about they were going to call the police, they heard me crying somewhere in the room. "Where is she???" my father yield anxious. According to the sound they finally found me.

Guess where were i hiding?????

Actually, I was right under the bed, but why my parents didn't find me when they search the bed?? As I mentioned my skin was dark at that time, dark as the darkness under bed, so they couldn't recognize me. It's like a person with dark skin falls into the chocolate track, and nobody will find him. ha...

mmrycuh

What's in a word?

Here's a verification "word" that is more of a word than a real word.
I mean what real word could stirr my brain the way this mmrycuh does?

How do you pronounce it?

First, 'mm' like "mmm, how good this pizza is"?

then 'ry' like "oh, rye bread, mmm"?

then "cuh" like the sound a pigeon makes?

(if you have a different way of pronouncing it, please comment on this thread with instructions)

So then,

Mm-ry-cuh

Mmrycuh

What's in that word?

A name?

An order in an alien menu from a galaxy not so far away? Like, "I'll have a mmrycuh please with guacamole on top" or some such?

If a name, is it a boy's or a girl's?

And if it were the name of an old man, say chief of the Tribe so and so, would the sound of such a name cut down years from his life, everytime someone called him and thus he'd never die?

I'd like to write a children's book someday.

And that's my ramble for today.

And hey, Fiona, what you just posted, I think was kind of like a writing assignment. Making us write and think at the same time.

Now all others, come on, like I said, give us a writing assignment. Anybody. Anytime.

Oh wait, I heard someone think,

"what about on Sabbaths, do we have to come here on the Sabbath?"

Well, it's up to you guys, I think God loves words, so sure, I'll be here.

For now, goodnight all.

ags

What do you think?

Another 5 more minutes before class starts. Just want to ask your opinions. What do you think of our young people today? Let's take MC for instance. Are they mature enough to think what is ethical or are they just plain I-don't-care attitude? Every Chapel or Assembly or Worhips meeting, there would always be some Bzzzzz....around the back seats. If you have noticed this, tell me how do you actually feel? I really get irritated at them because they do not give any respect to those who are up on the stage. Don't you think it's funny, when the speaker talks, everyone talks but when it's time for prayer, they suddenly become so clever to keep silent for that moment. Sometimes it really makes me wonder what do these students actually think.

Well, tell me what you think.

It's class time. Got to go now.

Shrug It Off

Had my eyes checked today at the auditorium. Something totally unplanned. I just happened to pass by when I saw through the open doors two of my friends seated somewhere at the fronts seats. Went up to them and saw some other students having their eyes checked. I tried on one or two of the eye glasses that were displayed on the table. I think I got myself attached to one of them - the one suggested by my friend. The structure of the frame and the combination of color it had was what made me fall for it. Hah! Like I'm falling for some guy. Anyway back to the eye check thing (or eye test if you prefer - whatever). My degree went up - slightly for one eye and half from the original degree for the other (I had an eye check once a long time back). My friend told me that that gave me all the reason to get glasses. Hm..but nah. Getting myself one - for a fairly good bargain of price - would simply be a waste of money. I don't think I'd actually wear them. Makes me feel all retarded or something (okay maybe I already am in some ways).

But you know what? I'm still thinking of those glasses. I'm picturing it in my head suspended in mid-air, slowly rotating itself, beckoning me, calling out to me, "Buy me." It's like the serpent tempting Eve to take a bite of that red, juicy, shiny apple (nah...that wasn't mentioned in the Bible). I gotta shut it off - shut this little movie playing in my head. Where's the power supply?

HEY ME! GET OVER IT!

i will. i think i had enough of it.

Oh no, things are changing

Well not really. Only two small details. I have enabled "word verification". That sounds like alien talk. It means that when you are going to post a comment it will ask you to type in the word you see on the screen. This I had to do so we can protect our blog from spam comments. I don't know if we would have even gotten any being a private blog, but who knows. The words they come up with are all weird letter combinations. Sometimes you get really weird ones that sound like almost-words. You may wanna venture out some day and write about one of them.

The other change is the little black and white scetch on the profile. May it inspire you every time you look upon it. :)

Is anyone up for giving us all a writing assignment? I don't want to be the only one doing that. We can take turns or skip turns. But don't be shy to suggest something new. At the same time, go on and write about everything else under the sun. Like oh no, things are changing. Hair is growing, or hair is falling, nails to cut, and then today I noticed the pond water level had gone down even though it's been raining a lot this week...has it not been enough? And the green is turning brown, I do love the dry season here but the brown gets really depressing. Especially driving on the highway to Saraburi, looking on the hills no longer full but more like the poor diseased dogs you find in the street that have lost all their hair and are peeling. Oh yuck, discusting thoughts. I should not write all this and have my students read it. :D lol

I am freewriting of course. And now I've just become too aware of what I'm saying. So I'm completely blocking myself from thinking of anything. Hmm.. Tick tock. I gotta go sleep. Hmmm...what else, what else. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr............................................... have mercy!!!!!! i can't write another ding dong dang.

A Feast!!

Yes a feast of different entries for me to look forward to. I was quite surprised to see the number of entries that have been made over the week. I'm loving this circle. Haven't gone through all the entries yet though. Anyway do hope to see a lot more throughout this course.

i killed something

Sometimes ago, i went out early in the morning for exercise. the morning air was fresh and the birds sang sweetly in the campus. i felt cool and fresh. i jogged for awhile and then i heard the sound of breaking twig. i stopped and looked around. i found nothing but i found something was wrong with my shoes. i looked the sole of my shoe and i saw the dead snail was broken into pieces under my shoe. i thought little snail was unlucky. for awhile i planned to leave that place, in front of me, i saw a small sleeping snake was not far from the dead snail and it slept soundly and it did not know that the snail was killed. the snake was lucky may be it had a sweet dream.

#1 The crazy Experiment

This story happened when I was around seven years old. I was making Som-Tam with my elder sister. She prepared the ingredients, and I was the one who roasted peanuts in the frying pan.

I used the flipper flipped peanuts in the pan. When I finished I was going to touch another side of the flipper that made of stainless. My sister shouted to me,

"Don't touch it. It's hot!"

I shouted back,
"How come!? I used it roased the peanuts for a long time. And I didn't feel hot at all!"

"It is because of you touch the handle! But don't touch another side, It's hot!"

"It isn't!"

"IT IS!!"

"IT ISN'T!!"

So I used the stainless side touched my chin to prove wether it was hot or not.

...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!

My chin hurt for a week.

Thoughts passing through...

Do you like speed? I like speed. I mean, I don't just like, I love speed! I guess it runs in the family - almost all (if not all!) of my mother's 6 brothers drive fast, my brother drives fast and some of my cousins drive fast too. I don't have a driving licence...yet, but I have been driving ilegally for the past 2 years. Never caught, never sued. Not yet, at least. I remember the first time of learning how to drive. I was around 12 years old and by that time, my brother already knew how to drive and a cousin of mine who was a year older than I was also knew how to drive (boy, was I jealous!) So, when we visited this cousin of mine, both my brother and my cousin decided to teach me how to drive. It was an embarrassingly funny experience - with all the teasing they made of me! After that, I decided that I would not learn how to drive, everrrrrr. But, I decided that that incident was the past and I actually 'learned' how to drive just by noticing what my brother or father did whenever they drive and also by asking lots and lots of questions. When my father finally allowed me to try driving our car, I believed it went smoothly. I was relieved. And everytime I go home for the holidays, my father would allow me to drive whenever I wanted to but only if either him or my brother was beside me. In Malaysia, when one is learning how to drive he or she is only allowed to go 60 km/hr, I go up to 80 km/hr or sometimes even 90 km/hr only if it's a long and straight stretch of road. I always feel a rush of excitement inside of me whenever I'm driving fast! However, there is one thing that I am scared of whenever I am driving. Big lorries. They scare me even if they're moving at only 70 km/hr. Why the fear? I don't know. I always have the image of the lorry falling sideways and crush me to death. LOL!

Another thought just came into my mind - have you ever been chased by a rooster? Yes? No? Well, I'd been through that experience. A lot of new things happen whenever I am back for the holidays. And this time...being chased by a rooster, my dad's rooster. He used to have a rooster a few years back and that rooster was friendly. So, I assumed that this rooster was also friendly. But I was wrong...so wrong! I went near that rooster before my dad even got the chance to warn me that that particular rooster likes to chase people (except my dad of course - bias!) As soon as I went near the rooster (to say 'hi'...hahahaha!) that stoopid rooster chased me and I had to run! Luckily there was a water tank nearby, so I climbed on it to get away from the rooster. My dad was laughing at the sight of me on that water tank. From that day onward, whenever I saw that rooster, I would automatically keep a distance from it.

I actually have a picture of that rooster:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I thought the colours of its feathers were beautiful, that's why I wanted to "say" hi to it in the first place. Stooopid idea....:D

Well, it has stopped raining. Time to go.

sacrificing is needed.

hi! I have some unpleasant story that I have experienced to share with you guys again. I was in BKK few days before the school started. While I was in the sky train, 2-3 stations passed by, the pregnant lady got into the train. But because the train was full of people, there was no seat for her. A nice lady who was sitting there decided to give a pregnant lady a seat. But, unfortunately, a fat lady suddenly took that seat instead because she thought that a nice lady gave the seat to her!. So, the pregnant lady couldn't have a seat.
I thought to myself that what a terrible fat woman she was. However, a nice lady told a fat lady to get off, but the fat lady sat still and smiled like nothing happen. Guess what, all the passengers on the train looked at that fat lady and cursed her too. But she was still unshamed!
Finally, a couple couldn't stand any more, so, they got up and gave their seat to the pregnant lady. People gave them an applause, and a poor pregnant lady thank them for being so kind. However, the fat lady got off on the next station.
I would like to say that we sometime need to be kind to the people who need help. If everything we can help, just help. no matter where you are or what you do.

Only in my dreams

Hmmm...Everytime I pass this shop, I would always ask myself, "When can I ever buy them?" or "Ooo...they're so pretty!" I know that I can never buy them, not because of the price (though they are qutie expensive to buy) but the thought of where to wear them gives me reason. I would park my car on the 4th floor of Centre Point and once I enter the mall, my head would automatically turn to left, looking at all those winter clothes that the shop was selling. Blue, pink, green, mixed colour...Oh!!! They are just torturing me!

I like the thought of winter and playing them in the snow but then there isn't any in Malaysia and it wouldn't be any good for me to buy them since it wouldn't be sensible wearing them anyway. Sometimes I do get envy at those people who enters the shop, looking and carefully choosing them for their trip to somewhere where it is cold. Ah...I can imagine myself wearing one of those think, comfortable blue ones while I am playing outside of my house with the snow. Perhaps I might be even playing snowballs. *giggles* Throwing some snowballs at some kids. Boy, am I having fun!

Unfortunately, there's this thing that brings me back to reality and then I would go on shopping at other sensible clothings. Hmmm...just wondering, Thailand...or at least Muak Lek has winter season (though there is no snow), maybe I could just buy one. Nah...it's still not logical enough to wear them. Guess I'll just keep on dreaming then....

The aftermath of a rain

it stopped raining, for now, but probably some more will come later...

before i dive into my post of the day, i have a little something for Ms Ani, (I hope you don't mind (>O^) = it's a wink...hehehehehehehehehe), earlier on in my free write, you were wondering if our fingers would ever stray out of rhythm. Well, for example, if you've been playing a piece for a LONG time, you might get too used to playing that piece that sometimes either your hands will overtake the other. it's a psychological thing. And the second reason i can think of is because most of us have unequal strength in our hands. For those you are right handed will have stronger right hands and vice versa. So, sometimes when the piece is fast, your weaker hand will tend to slow, in other words, it tires off easily.

Okay, now to the real thing...

Rain rain go away,
Come again another day!!!
Rain, rain go away,
I have no idea what the next line is...

I would say the 'rain' is a relfection of how mother earth is feeling. Right now, i bet she's not feeling quite well. I would say I am an environmentalist, but i still do have my moments where i just don't care! A long time ago, I was studying at a Public Chinese School. I would go down to town and spend the whole day there either in class or just daydreaming in my mom's workplace. I guess my parents thought that staying in the library would be a better choice for its educational environment, but i've always longed to hang out at my dad's office, which was in the hospital. anyway, on weekends, i would go to SASS (Sabah Adventist Secondary School) and have Adventurer meetings there and basically have fun with my other friends. There was this particular sunday, it was in the late afternoon and it was raining real hard. The water has risen to about 8 inches deep and it was overflowing into the school grounds. So, with the rising water, my other friends and I (including Julie!!) started playing out in the rain. We started out by playing tag, (in my language its called bubut-bubut). So there we were, having a jolly good time, chasing each other in the rain. SUDDENLY, we started throwing frogs at each other!!! I have no idea how it started out, but we were all picking up frogs how were swept by the current and we were throwing it at each other!!! The frogs would bounce off from our backs, and land into the water with a 'plop' sound. At that time, i was pretty ignorant of what was actually going on. I was still raw and wild. That week was really a frog-week-fest! I remember one afternoon, my friends and I saw a dead frog, and we performed an autopsy on the frog and later had a funeral for it. We laid the frog on a water lily leaf, and decorated it with the flowers we picked from the shrubs around the school.

I miss having fun. I wonder why we tend to forget how to have fun as we age. FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN... fun is tiring. I am contracdicting myself again...

Of Rain and Shoes

The sky has got out its hoses and we're all getting wet down here. I love to hear a hard rain though I don't really like to get caught in it. Right outside my office window now the gardeners are running for cover with their brooms and other tools the names of which, luckily or unluckily, I don't have to know. The rain is kind of curtaining the church away from the rest of the view and the thousand fingers of the coconut tree next to my window are hurting to their capillaries.

I remember one day in the rain, late in the evening my father and I came back from a shoe store. My father had just bought me new shoes. They were brown and so beautifully polished. I think these were my first winter shoes, the first polished ones. My parents couldn't afford to buy me more than one pair a year or so. And I didn't really fit well in them but I knew I wanted them and I told my dad, yes, dad, they fit perfectly. So he bought them for me. And we were walking back home and it was pouring and it was dark and all I could think of was the box I was holding near my chest with the new brown polished shoes I would wear the next day to school. I felt like I knew something nobody else did. I knew this because I was holding it. That whole memory is polished brown in my mind. The streets, the store with one flickering neon light at the back, the man that handed me the brown box, his forgetable face, my happiness at the not-so-well-fitting perfect shoes.

In fifteen minutes I need to get upstairs and see you guys.
Please start posting something now. Anything.
A memory. A dream. A wish. A plan. A plot. A pondering. :)
Tell us a story. Look up and tell us what you see.
Right now. As you read this.
This second.
Ready?
GO!!
